Inter Services Public Relations issued a press release this week about corps commanders’ meeting at the General Headquarters presided by Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif caused an uproar among civilian government and opposition leaders. The meeting reviewed the country’s internal security situation and the progress on the implementation of the 20-point NAP.

According to ISPR, senior military leadership underlined the need for matching initiatives on the part of the government to secure long-term gains of the operations against terrorists and enduring peace in the country. The army went public on Tuesday with its concerns about poor implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) and warned that efficacy of its counter-terrorism efforts could be undercut by inadequate supporting actions by civilian agencies.

Legislators in the Upper House of parliament also called upon all the institutions to work within their constitutional limits and vowed to stand by the government.

Modi Loses Popularity

India’s ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces a major blow this Sunday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi conceded defeat in a key election in Bihar, one of India’s poorest and largest states. Modi’s Hindu nationalist party was leading in only 58 seats in the 243-seat state assembly compared to 160 for a coalition of rival regional parties, as vote counting continued. Modi addressed some 30 campaign rallies and promised voters billions of dollars for development in a state where two thirds lack access to electricity.

Meanwhile in London, hundreds of people protested outside Downing Street against the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron. His visit comes at a time when a debate is raging in India over accusations that Modi is failing to contain violent activities of Hindu extremists who are trying to impose their values on all Indians. Ahead of his arrival, more than 200 writers including Salman Rushdie and Ian McEwan signed an open letter to Prime Minister Cameron, urging him to raise concerns about freedom of expression in India during his talks with Modi. Meanwhile about 45 British members of parliament also signed a motion to debate India’s human rights record.
